YRF Spy Universe: Why ‘Alpha’ Has Us Curious About The Franchise’s Next Chapter

With the trailer for Alpha finally out, the ever-expanding YRF Spy Universe is gearing up to welcome a new chapter—one that arrives with plenty of intrigue, some familiar names, and a notable shift in perspective.

Directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha marks the first female-led film within the blockbuster spy franchise that has so far been powered by larger-than-life heroes in films such as War, Pathaan, and Tiger. While it is still far too early to make sweeping claims based solely on a trailer, there is enough here to suggest that Yash Raj Films is looking to broaden the scope of its interconnected universe.

The two-minute-and-thirty-three-second trailer introduces audiences to Sita, a woman whose life appears to have been shaped by a highly classified programme known as Alpha. Raised and trained under the guidance of a character played by Bobby Deol, she finds herself caught in circumstances that seemingly pit her against the very system that created her.

Leading the film is Alia Bhatt, who steps into action territory in what looks to be one of her more physically demanding roles to date. Joining her is Sharvari, whose presence adds another dimension to the narrative. From what the trailer reveals, the two characters share a partnership built around survival, trust and a common purpose—an angle that offers something fresh within the larger spy universe.

Behind the camera is Shiv Rawail, whose work on The Railway Men earned appreciation for balancing scale with storytelling. With Alpha, he appears to bring that sensibility to a much larger canvas, complete with international locations, elaborate action set pieces and a contemporary soundtrack that includes HUGEL’s popular track Jamaican Bam Bam.

The supporting cast also lends considerable weight to the project. Bobby Deol continues his association with high-profile action entertainers, while veteran actor Anil Kapoor adds further star power to an ensemble already packed with familiar faces. Unsurprisingly, the trailer’s closing moments have sparked speculation among fans regarding how Alpha might eventually connect with the wider YRF Spy Universe.

With a talented cast, an established studio backing the project, and the promise of a fresh dynamic within the franchise, Alpha certainly gives audiences enough reason to be curious.

Whether it ultimately becomes a defining chapter in the YRF Spy Universe remains to be seen. For now, though, we’re happy to simply enjoy the build-up and wait for the film to speak for itself when it arrives in cinemas.

Alpha is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on July 3, 2026.
