‘One Night Only’ Movie Review: A High-Octane, Unconventional Rom-Com That Delivers Pure Fun

If you’re looking for a fresh, laugh-out-loud Hollywood release, Universal Pictures’ latest romantic comedy One Night Only, hitting theaters today, brings an unconventional, high-concept premise straight to the screen. Imagine a world—or rather, an America—where single people get just one single night a year for legal consensual sex (ha ha ha!). Now imagine the sheer, unadulterated madness that ensues when an entire nation goes berserk trying to find “the one” on the most high-stakes, pressure-cooker night on the calendar. Starring the magnetic pair Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, this wild storyline is the nouveau engine behind the film, and rest is for you to experience—I assure you it’s a joy ride, one you would not want to get off too early!

The narrative sets off on this absurd annual night where everyone is desperately scrambling for romantic pay-off, following Allie and Owen as they attempt to navigate the chaos individually before destiny steps in. What makes the storytelling so refreshing is how it seamlessly blends high-energy slapstick comedy with genuine heart. From late-night pizza counter debates over whether extra cheese is better than sex to awkward bathroom-line introductions, the film captures the frantic energy of modern dating and cranks it up to eleven.

Individually, the lead cast brings pure magic to the screen. Callum Turner as Owen brings a crazy hot oomph and an effortless charm that could literally charm the birds out of the trees, all while keeping his character grounded as the endearingly flustered guy just trying to make sense of the night. On the other side, Monica Barbaro as Allie is an absolute vision of loveliness. Her striking shimmery dress steals the thunder completely and elevates her screen appeal, balancing magnetic glamour with sharp, witty cynicism as a girl who just wants to find real love on the least romantic night of the year.

When the two come together, their chance encounters lead to a fantastic blow-hot, blow-cold push-and-pull dynamic that forms the emotional core of the film. They trade deadpan insults about hairlines, ears looking like car doors, and noses being too small, only to soften into moments of sheer vulnerability. Whether they are running through NYC subways or facing down overzealous cops asking if they are together, their banter and natural camaraderie make their blossoming relationship completely unforgettable.

A huge tip of the hat goes to director Will Gluck, who has previously mastered modern romantic comedies with massive crowd-pleasers like Easy A, Friends with Benefits, and Anyone But You. Gluck knows exactly how to pace high-energy urban chaos without losing sight of the romance. However, the absolute standout star for me is screenwriter Travis Braun, whose original screenplay turns a wild concept into sharp, impactful writing with clever wordplay and brilliant situational comedy. Tying it all together is the film’s vibrant background score and soundtrack by Este Haim and Christopher Stracey. The music blends so beautifully into the narrative, seamlessly shifting between high-tempo frenzy and tender emotional moments, giving the film a distinct, unforgettable identity.

Unconventional, sweet, romantic, and delightfully chaotic, One Night Only proves that even in the most insane setups, finding someone who makes going through the madness worth it is what true cinema magic is all about. Grab that special someone, your BFF, or your entire gang, and enjoy this 1-hour and 40-minute roller coaster ride!
