From The Library to Anant Ashray: Nita Ambani’s Weekend of Culture, Community and Care

From creating a new destination for books, ideas and cultural exchange to laying the foundation for a township envisioned around lifelong care and dignity, Nita Ambani marked her birthday weekend with two distinct initiatives that brought culture and philanthropy into focus.

The weekend saw the opening of The Library at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) in Mumbai, followed by the groundbreaking ceremony for Nita Mukesh Ambani Anant Ashray, a proposed 100-acre township in Karjat envisioned as a lifelong home for more than 5,000 people, including orphaned children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

The first of the two developments was The Library, a new two-level literary and cultural destination at NMACC, designed to bring together books, reading, food and conversations. Designed by architect and designer Ashiesh Shah, the space houses more than 4,500 curated titles spanning fiction, children’s literature, art, design, history, culture, food and travel. The collection also includes the complete Amar Chitra Katha series, presented through an installation titled the Chariot of Wisdom.

Conceived as more than a conventional library or bookstore, the space combines dedicated reading areas, intimate alcoves, a circular coffee bar and an all-day dining experience co-created by the NMACC team and restaurateur Aditi Dugar. It is also designed to encourage conversations and cultural engagement through a year-round programme of author interactions, storytelling sessions, spoken-word performances, workshops and activities for children and families.

The Library opened to visitors on November 1, adding another dimension to NMACC’s cultural offering and creating a space where literature and shared experiences can find a place alongside its established programmes in the performing and visual arts.

From Cultural Discovery to a Community Built Around Care

A day later, the focus shifted from a space dedicated to books and ideas to an initiative centred on something far more fundamental: providing a home, care and a sense of belonging.

On November 1, coinciding with her 62nd birthday, Nita Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, performed the Bhumi Pujan and groundbreaking ceremony for Nita Mukesh Ambani Anant Ashray at its proposed site in Karjat, near Mumbai.

Spread across approximately 100 acres, the permanent, not-for-profit initiative is envisioned as a residential township offering lifelong homes to more than 5,000 people. Its primary beneficiaries will include orphaned children, senior citizens and individuals with physical and developmental disabilities who require varying levels of care and support.

The vision goes beyond that of a conventional institutional care facility. Anant Ashray is being planned as an inclusive community where residents can experience the familiarity of family life, participate in everyday activities and have opportunities to learn, work, develop relationships and live with greater independence.

The proposed township will comprise eight residential villages, each named after a sacred river of India. Residents will live in smaller, family-style homes supported by dedicated house parents and trained caregivers. Individualised care and development plans are also envisaged, taking into account healthcare, education, skills, employment and personal well-being at different stages of life.

Healthcare, Education and Opportunities for Independent Living

Healthcare and rehabilitation will form an important part of the proposed development. Plans include a specialised hospital with services covering developmental medicine, epilepsy care, special-needs dentistry and palliative care, alongside rehabilitation facilities offering physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and hydrotherapy.

The wider ecosystem is expected to include inclusive sports and recreational infrastructure, educational facilities, gardens, farms and creative spaces. An animal companionship farm, being developed with expertise from Vantara, is also part of the vision, offering residents opportunities for meaningful interaction with animals.

Vocational training and employment opportunities will be another important component, with proposed facilities including a bakery, café and craft studios. These are intended to help residents acquire practical skills, explore meaningful work and experience the dignity that comes with greater participation and independence.

The plans also extend beyond the township’s residents. Family respite homes, mobile medical clinics and community healthcare services are envisaged to support families in neighbouring areas. Approximately 1,000 people from the surrounding region are expected to access therapy, education and employment opportunities through the initiative.

At full scale, Anant Ashray is expected to support a wider community of approximately 15,000 people, including residents, caregivers, medical professionals, support staff and their families.

Two Initiatives, A Shared Vision of Community

While The Library and Anant Ashray serve very different purposes, both initiatives reflect an emphasis on creating spaces that bring people together and offer opportunities for engagement, learning and personal growth.

The Library seeks to encourage a renewed relationship with books, reading and cultural discovery, particularly among younger generations. Anant Ashray, meanwhile, addresses the need for sustained care and support for individuals and families who often face considerable challenges in accessing specialised services and long-term residential care.

For Nita Ambani, the two developments mark different expressions of her involvement in India’s cultural and philanthropic landscape. One opens its doors to knowledge, imagination and creative exchange; the other is envisioned as a place where people can find a home, a support system and a sense of belonging throughout their lives.

Together, the developments made for a significant weekend in Mumbai and its surrounding region, bringing the conversation around culture and community into focus through two very different, yet meaningful, initiatives.
