Wealth in the modern era is defined by influence, innovation, and global ambition. M3M India and Hurun India launched the 15th edition of the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026, a comprehensive tracking of individuals born or brought up in India holding a net worth of INR 1,000 crore or more, regardless of their current residence or passport.
Calculated as a snapshot as of August 24, 2026—when the exchange rate stood at INR 95.63 to the US dollar—the landmark report reveals how Indian enterprise is creating, accumulating, and reshaping wealth worldwide.
The 2026 Wealth Landscape at a Glance
The scope of Indian wealth creation has expanded significantly this year. The 2026 edition features 1,810 individuals across 163 cities (106 of them in India), reflecting an increase of 128 people from last year. Their cumulative fortune stands at INR 187.5 lakh crore (USD 1.96 trillion)—a 12.8% rise—even as market benchmark indices saw the Nifty 50 fall 3.9% and the Sensex decline 5.8% over the same period.
India now counts a record 391 dollar billionaires, up 27 from last year. Underscoring the strength of the nation’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, a record 1,266 entrepreneurs—accounting for 70% of the entire list—are self-made. Additionally, 131 women feature on the list, up from 100 in the previous edition.
Top Wealth Creators & Industry Trends
At the absolute peak of the list, familiar business leaders continue to set the benchmark for global wealth creation:

- Mukesh Ambani (69) & family hold the No. 2 spot with a net worth of INR 8.63 lakh crore.

By sector, Industrial Products leads as the most populous industry on the list with 166 entrants, followed by Chemicals with 142 entrants and Pharmaceuticals with 136 entrants. Marking a major technological shift, Artificial Intelligence entered as a standalone sector for the first time, debuting with 19 entrants possessing a combined wealth of INR 3.07 lakh crore.
Economic Insights & Ecosystem Evolution
Beyond the headline wealth figures, the 2026 report serves as an essential annual barometer tracking the fundamental economic shifts and entrepreneurial journeys driving India’s next growth phase. The data reveals an expanding wealth creation engine where growth has effectively outpaced equity market trends.
A major catalyst behind this expansion is the rapid rise of new-age industries—such as defense, advanced manufacturing, green energy, and artificial intelligence—which are actively reshaping both the sources of Indian wealth and the profile of individuals generating it. The debut of AI as an independent category, featuring 15 brand-new entrants among its 19 listers, underscores how cutting-edge technology is quickly becoming a primary driver of high-value fortunes.
Highlighting this structural shift, Dr. Payal Bansal Kanodia, Promoter, Chairperson & Trustee, M3M Foundation, noted:
“The 2026 M3M Hurun India Rich List reflects the depth and dynamism of India’s wealth-creation story. With 70% of the 1,810 individuals being self-made and 347 new entrants, it is clear that India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem continues to expand and diversify, with growing participation from younger entrepreneurs and women.”
Adding perspective on the broader macroeconomic trend, Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher, Hurun India, stated:
“The M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026 captures a year in which wealth creation outpaced the stock market. Defence, manufacturing, green energy and artificial intelligence are changing both the sources of Indian wealth and the people creating it.”
Geographic Reach
The geographic distribution of listers illustrates that while Indian enterprise operates on a global scale, domestic urban centers remain the principal hubs of wealth generation. Mumbai continues to lead the national tally with 465 individuals, followed by New Delhi with 236 individuals and Bengaluru with 129 individuals.
Ultimately, the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026 documents a pivotal transition in the Indian economy—one where traditional industrial strength and emerging technological sectors converge to build a broader, deeper, and more resilient base of global wealth creators.
