The landscape of Indian historical cinema is about to expand as Wingspan Motion Pictures LLP officially announces its most ambitious project to date: “Ereya,” a grand cinematic tribute to the legendary 6th-century sovereign, Emperor Pulakeshi II. Helmed by Filmfare Award-winning filmmaker K M Chaitanya, the film is set to be a massive Pan-India production, chronicling the visionary reign and military genius of one of South India’s most powerful rulers. Based on the rigorous historical research of Dr. Bhooshan Shanbhag, producers Sunit Jawadekar and Nivedita Kothare—the duo behind acclaimed titles like Phamous—aim to bring the grandeur of ancient India to life across major South Indian languages and Hindi. With the project slated to go on floors later this year, Ereya is positioned to be a landmark addition to the genre of historical epics, capturing a legacy that once spanned half the Indian subcontinent.
Helming this ambitious project is acclaimed Filmfare Award-winning Kannada filmmaker K M Chaitanya known for his nuanced storytelling and striking visual style. Chaitanya has directed 8 commercially successful feature films in Kannada. His first feature film “Aa Dinagalu” won several awards including the Filmfare Awards South for Best Director and Best Feature Film in 2007. He also won the Times KAFTA award – 2017 for “Best Adapted Screenplay” for his movie “Aake”. His upcoming film “Balaramana Dinagalu” is due for release this year. With “Ereya”, he brings together history, drama and spectacle to create a cinematic experience that captures the grandeur and spirit of ancient India.
This will be the producers’ third feature film, the first 2 being their Hindi films “Phamous” with a stellar cast of Kay Kay Menon, Jimmy Shergil, Jackie Shroff, Pankaj Tripathi, etc. and “Panga Naa Lo” directed by the late Rajen Kothari and starring Om Puri, Satish Shah, Supriya Pathak etc. “Phamous” is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. Both these films were produced under their banner Vidisha Productions Pvt. Ltd. (a sister concern of Wingspan Motion Pictures LLP)
Envisioned on a grand cinematic scale, as a pan-India project, “Ereya” will be produced in all major South Indian languages along with Hindi, aiming to reach audiences across the country and beyond. The film will feature a stellar ensemble cast from across India, supported by a team of highly experienced technicians.
The makers are currently in the process of finalising key details, including lead star cast and technical crew, which will be announced soon. The film is likely to go on floors by the end of this year depending on the lead star cast. With its massive vision and compelling narrative, “Ereya” promises to be a landmark film that celebrates the legacy of one of India’s greatest emperors.
