Mardini Review: A Riveting Marathi Crime Drama That Delivers Suspense, Emotion and Edge-of-the-Seat Entertainment

Our Rating: ★★★★ (4/5)

There are films that entertain, and then there are films that completely pull you into their world. Mardini belongs firmly in the latter category. Releasing in cinemas on July 3, 2026, this Marathi crime thriller is a tightly woven, emotionally charged drama that keeps you invested from its opening scene right until the end credits.

While Mardini may be marketed as a crime thriller, it offers far more than just mystery and suspense. Beneath its thrilling premise lies an emotionally resonant family drama and a heartfelt story about motherhood, resilience, courage, and the extraordinary lengths one will go to protect those they love.

The Story (Without Spoilers)

At its heart, Mardini is an emotional story of a devoted single mother and the extraordinary bond she shares with her young daughter. Their seemingly peaceful life takes an unexpected turn when a mysterious and unsettling force begins to disrupt their world. As fear slowly gives way to determination, the mother is forced to confront circumstances far beyond imagination, drawing upon every ounce of courage to protect the one person she loves most.

Without revealing any of the film’s carefully guarded surprises, what stands out about Mardini is how confidently it maintains its grip on the audience from beginning to end. Whether before the interval or after it, the narrative never loses focus or momentum. Audiences walking into the theatre expecting an engaging crime drama will almost certainly walk out thoroughly entertained.

The film also deserves credit for respecting its audience’s intelligence. It doesn’t spoon-feed every revelation or over-explain every twist. Instead, it allows the suspense to unfold naturally, trusting viewers to stay invested. Every emotional moment feels earned, every twist has purpose, and every revelation contributes meaningfully to the larger narrative.

When Exceptional Writing Meets Exceptional Performances, Magic Happens

Let’s be honest—there are films with brilliant actors that are let down by weak writing, and there are films with excellent scripts that fail because the performances never quite rise to the occasion. Mardini is refreshingly neither. This is one of those rare films where a tightly written screenplay and a remarkably committed ensemble cast complement each other at every turn. Neither overshadows the other; instead, they work in perfect sync to create an engrossing cinematic experience.

Writer Mahabaleshwar Latadevi Narvekar deserves immense credit for crafting a screenplay that keeps audiences constantly engaged, while director Ajay Baikar brings that vision to life with remarkable confidence and restraint. Instead of relying on exaggerated theatrics or unnecessary distractions, the film trusts its story and its characters, allowing every scene to build naturally towards an immensely satisfying payoff.

Prarthana Behere, who shoulders the film as its fearless Mardini mother, delivers what is undoubtedly one of the strongest performances of her career. She doesn’t merely play a protective mother—she lives every emotion. Whether portraying vulnerability, fear, resilience, or sheer determination, her performance feels organic rather than theatrical. In a role that could easily have slipped into melodrama, she exercises remarkable restraint, making every emotional beat resonate with authenticity.

Young Myra Vaikul, playing her daughter, is nothing short of a revelation. Child performances can often feel coached or overly dramatic, but Myra brings an effortless innocence and naturalness that instantly wins you over. Her chemistry with Prarthana Behere is convincing that the emotional stakes of the film feel genuinely personal, giving the story its beating heart.

Jitendra Joshi once again proves why he remains one of Marathi cinema’s most dependable actors. He doesn’t rely on grand gestures or dramatic dialogue to make an impact. Instead, his understated screen presence, expressive eyes, and controlled performance add tremendous gravitas to the narrative, and he leaves a lasting impression without ever demanding the spotlight.

Abhijeet Khandkekar is another performer who deserves special mention. He brings intensity and quiet confidence to his character, making you sit up and take notice every time he appears on screen. His measured performance adds another compelling layer to the narrative and reinforces why he continues to be one of the industry’s finest performers.

The supporting cast—Rajesh Bhosle, Sonali Patil, Vinayak Bhave, Sandhya Mhatre, Swati Bowalekar, Ramesh Rokade, Shraddha Satam, Bhushan Telang, Shashikant Gandhe, Ayush Rupali Jain, and Sandhya Bhupendram—deserves equal applause. Far too often, supporting characters in thrillers exist merely to move the plot forward. Here, each actor is given enough purpose to make their presence count. Nobody feels like filler, nobody appears wasted, and each performance adds another layer of credibility to the film’s world.

Ultimately, Mardini succeeds because it understands a simple truth: a strong screenplay can only take a film so far unless actors breathe life into its pages, and outstanding performances can only shine when supported by meaningful writing. Here, the writing, direction, and performances elevate one another at every stage, resulting in a film that is gripping, emotionally satisfying, and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.

A Film That Trusts Storytelling Over Spectacle

Here, every technical department works in complete harmony with the story instead of trying to overpower it. The background score effectively heightens the suspense without overshadowing the emotional moments, while the cinematography beautifully balances intimacy with tension, allowing every frame to serve the narrative.

The crisp editing ensures the film maintains its rhythm throughout, never allowing the suspense to dip or the audience’s attention to wander. Credit is equally due to producer Shreyas Talpade, along with co-producers Teena Gunvanti Dhumawat and Deepti Talpade, and creative producers Atharv Pradnya Sane and Bhushan Telang, for backing a film that places storytelling above spectacle. In an age where bigger often masquerades as better, Mardini is a reminder that conviction, craft, and sincerity can be just as powerful.

Our Verdict: One of Marathi Cinema’s Finest Entertainers of 2026

The result is a gripping crime drama that seamlessly blends suspense, emotion, family dynamics, and mystery into a thoroughly satisfying theatrical experience. From its opening scene to its emotionally rewarding finale, Mardini proves that a well-written and well-executed story will always triumph over unnecessary spectacle.

Whether you’re a fan of crime dramas, emotional family stories, or simply appreciate quality filmmaking, Mardini deserves to be experienced on the big screen. Its OTT destination is yet to be announced, but this is undoubtedly a film best enjoyed in a theatre, where every moment of tension and every emotional beat can be fully appreciated.

Here’s hoping Mardini receives the audience and theatrical run it genuinely deserves. The film releases across theatre on 3rd July 2026.
