Baramulla Review: A Haunting Supernatural Drama That Delivers Mystery, Emotion, and Edge-of-Seat Suspense

Set against the breathtaking yet unsettling backdrop of Kashmir, Baramulla, premiering on Netflix on November 7, 2025, emerges as a gripping supernatural drama that perfectly blends mystery, emotion, and suspense.

For those of us who love this genre, it’s the kind of film that ticks every box — eerie storytelling, atmospheric visuals, layered performances, and a storyline that lingers long after the credits roll.

After giving us the critically acclaimed Article 370 last year, director Aditya Suhas Jambhale returns to Kashmir with Baramulla — a film that explores both literal and metaphorical horror, with more than a dash of the supernatural. Written by Aditya Dhar back in 2016, the story came from an idea that asked a simple question: “Can we make something in the horror genre in Kashmir?” What evolved from that thought was not just a traditional horror film, but one that redefines the genre through emotion, psychology, and local storytelling.

At its heart, Baramulla follows DSP Ridwaan Sayyed (Manav Kaul) as he investigates a series of mysterious child disappearances that shake the quiet town of Baramulla. As Ridwaan delves deeper into the case, he begins uncovering hidden family secrets, dark folklore, and paranormal occurrences that blur the line between reality and the supernatural. The narrative seamlessly intertwines Kashmir’s mysticism with deeply human conflicts — fear, duty, and belief.

What makes Baramulla stand out is how it integrates the socio-cultural fabric of Kashmir into the storytelling without turning political. The filmmakers consciously chose to explore the human side of the valley’s stories — the emotions, dilemmas, and psyche of those who live there. Through Ridwaan’s eyes, we see the inner conflict of a law officer torn between his duty, his family, and the haunted landscape he serves in.

The film’s texture is enriched by its subtle echoes of the 1990s exodus of Kashmiri Hindus, a real-life tragedy that finds emotional resonance within this supernatural thriller. It’s not just about hauntings of spirits — it’s about the haunting of memory and belonging, something the film powerfully evokes through both its setting and silence.

Production and Crew Details:

Shot in 23 days during the peak winter months of December, Baramulla captures the bone-chilling beauty and tension of Kashmir in every frame. The film is directed and written by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, based on a story by Aditya Dhar, and produced by Jyoti Deshpande (Jio Studios) and Aditya Dhar (B62 Studios).

The stellar cast includes Manav Kaul as DSP Ridwaan Sayyed, Bhasha Subli and Arista Mehta in key family roles. Supporting performances by Rohaan Singh, Neelofar Hamid, Masoom Mumtaz Khan, Ashwini Koul, Vikas Shukla, Mir Sarwar, Madan Nazneen, and Kiara Khanna

The cinematography paints Kashmir as both breathtaking and terrifying, the score complements the story’s emotional rhythm, and the direction strikes the perfect balance between suspense and sensitivity.

Our Verdict:

Though long in the making, Baramulla was well worth the wait. It’s rare to see a film where the supernatural, the psychological, and the emotional coexist so seamlessly. Director Aditya Suhas Jambhale crafts an experience that is as haunting as it is heartfelt — a thriller that doesn’t just scare but stays with you.

The film is scheduled to stream on Netflix Worldwide on November 7, 2025
