Minions & Monsters Review: The Minions Return to 1920s Hollywood

Release Date: July 1, 2026 (USA) | July 3, 2026 (India)
Studio: Illumination / Universal Pictures
Rating: Family / Animation / Comedy
Run Time: Approx. 90 minutes

Since Illumination first introduced Gru and his banana-loving henchmen in Despicable Me back in 2010, the franchise has grown into one of the most successful animated properties in modern cinema. What began as a story about a supervillain and his three adopted daughters quickly transformed into a global phenomenon, with the gibberish-speaking Minions stealing the spotlight and earning their own standalone adventures.

After two solo outings and multiple billion-dollar entries in the main series, the Despicable Me universe returns to theatres with Minions & Monstersthe third Minions film and the seventh overall installment. Released in Indian cinemas on July 3, 2026, this latest adventure trades gadgets and villainy for vintage Hollywood glamour, sending three ambitious Minions on a monster-filled quest through 1927 Tinseltown.

Story & Plot Overview

Set 41 years before the events of the original Minions (2015), the story centers on James, Henry, and Ed, three Minions who become enamored with cinema after crashing a film set in Hollywood. When the arrival of “talkies” sidelines them due to their unintelligible Minionese, the trio refuses to give up on their dream. Instead, they set out to make the greatest monster movie ever conceived.

Their plan takes a supernatural turn when they use a spellbook from a former evil-sorcerer boss to summon Goomi, a small Lovecraftian creature, hoping to cast real monsters in their production. The casting session quickly spirals out of control, unleashing a multi-eyed void monster named Irene and a full horde of creatures that threaten global dominance. What begins as a filmmaking fantasy becomes a planet-saving mission, forcing James, Henry, Ed, and the rest of the Minion tribe to clean up the very mayhem they created.

The narrative functions as a meta-cinematic adventure: the process of making a movie literally becomes the movie, filled with escalating practical disasters that mirror the chaos of an out-of-control film set.

Behind the scenes, Minions & Monsters is directed by Pierre Coffin, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Brian Lynch and once again lends his signature voice to the Minions themselves. The film is produced by Illumination founder Chris Meledandri alongside Bill Ryan, with Universal Pictures distributing the feature worldwide. Joining Coffin in the vocal booth is an eclectic ensemble of talent, including Trey Parker as the scene-stealing creature Goomi, Allison Janney as Olivia, Christoph Waltz as director Max, Jesse Eisenberg as the alien robot Dort, and Jeff Bridges in the dual role of studio heads Frank and Elwood Bright. Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, and even George Lucas in a cameo appearance round out the cast, while composer John Powell provides a fresh musical voice for the franchise.

For families and longtime fans of the Despicable Me universe, Minions & Monsters carries forward the spirit of the franchise with plenty of slapstick humor, mischievous energy, and moments of unexpected heart. Whether you have followed the Minions since their first appearance or are simply looking for a lighthearted outing at the cinema, the film invites audiences of all ages to enjoy the chaos and cheer on these familiar yellow characters as they stumble from one big adventure to the next.

Minions & Monsters is now running in theatres. Fans of the franchise can catch James, Henry, Ed, and the entire Minion crew on the big screen this weekend.
