There are patriotic films that depend on spectacle and grandiose emotions, and then there are films like Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, which choose to honour heroism with sincerity and restraint. Directed and written by Manoj Tapadia, this remarkable and emotionally engrossing thriller revisits one of the darkest chapters in India’s history — the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks — through the untold story of the courageous medical staff of Mumbai’s Cama Hospital. Rather than focusing on violence and destruction, the film shines a spotlight on the ordinary men and women who displayed extraordinary courage, putting the lives of others ahead of their own in the face of unimaginable danger.
What makes Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata stand apart from conventional patriotic dramas is its ability to find heroism in quiet acts of humanity. Nurses, ward boys, doctors and hospital staff become the real protagonists of this survival drama, and director Manoj Tapadia handles the subject with admirable sensitivity, avoiding unnecessary sensationalism. The claustrophobic setting within the hospital heightens the tension and immerses the audience in the fear, uncertainty and chaos that prevailed on that fateful night.
Leading the film is Kangana Ranaut, who delivers what is arguably one of the most mature and restrained performances of her career. Playing a brave and responsible frontline nurse inspired by real-life heroism, she brings remarkable dignity, compassion and emotional depth to the character. Eschewing melodrama, Kangana allows her understated expressions and quiet resilience to carry the weight of the narrative, resulting in a performance that is both moving and memorable.
The supporting cast, comprising Girija Oak, Smita Tambe, Prasad Oak, Esha Dey, Suhita Thatte, Rasika Agashe and others, lends authenticity and emotional heft to the proceedings. Their performances effectively capture the fear and vulnerability of individuals trapped in extraordinary circumstances, while also highlighting the spirit of selflessness and resilience that defined those harrowing hours.
From a technical standpoint, the film is equally impressive. Ayan Sil’s cinematography captures the tense and suffocating atmosphere with remarkable realism, while Aman Pant’s background score enhances the emotional impact without overwhelming the narrative. Dev Rao Jadhav’s crisp editing keeps the pace taut, and the sound design by Nihar Ranjan Samal further contributes to the immersive experience.
Directed and written by Manoj Tapadia; Produced by Kangana Ranaut, Jayantilal Gada, Shaailesh R. Singh, Babita Ashiwal and Adi Sharmaa; Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata emerges as a poignant and gripping survival drama that honours the unsung heroes of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks with dignity and sensitivity. Elevated by a restrained and deeply affecting performance from Kangana Ranaut and backed by strong technical craftsmanship, the film succeeds in delivering a powerful story of courage, compassion and sacrifice.
The film is slated for release worldwide on June 12, 2026.
