Suryakumar Yadav Sets Sights on Olympic Gold and T20 World Cup Hat-Trick After Ahmedabad Triumph

Fresh off leading India to a historic third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has officially shifted the national team’s focus toward a new frontier: Olympic Gold. Speaking on JioStar’s ‘Follow the Blues’, the Indian skipper reflected on the emotional journey of the 2026 campaign while outlining a relentless roadmap for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and a potential T20 World Cup hat-trick.

For Suryakumar, winning the trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium was a full-circle moment. Having made his international debut at the same venue in 2021, leading the “Men in Blue” to a World Cup victory in front of a home crowd in 2026 felt like destiny. “Winning here as a leader for India is a very special feeling,” SKY shared, noting that the collective energy of the stadium was the backbone of the team’s success.

Leadership for Yadav wasn’t just about tactical field placements; it was about keeping the “invisible” 15-man squad ready. He highlighted that his toughest task was keeping non-playing members motivated.

“The ones who play are on autopilot, but those who don’t get every game find it difficult to switch on and off,” Yadav explained. He credited the support staff for maintaining this delicate balance, ensuring that all 15 players felt like champions even if only 11 took the field.

The campaign was fueled by deeply personal stories. SKY revealed the moment he called Mohammed Siraj to replace an injured Harshit Rana, and the emotional promise made by Ishan Kishan to “walk the talk” and help India win the cup. He also labeled Jasprit Bumrah a “national treasure,” praising the pacer’s lack of complacency despite being the best in the business.

Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy’s match-winning performances in the final were the result of a “bow and arrow” philosophy Yadav instilled in them.

“When you pull the arrow back, it doesn’t mean life is pushing you back—it means it’s going to launch you for something big,” Yadav told them during their mid-tournament dips in form. He assured the duo they were built for the big stage, a prophecy that came true in the grand finale.

The 2028 Vision: Olympics and the Hat-Trick

India’s “ICC Trophy Drought” is now a distant memory, with back-to-back T20 World Cup titles (2024, 2026) and a Champions Trophy (2025) in the cabinet. Looking ahead, SKY is adamant that there is no room for relaxation.

“The 2028 LA Olympics will feature cricket for the first time, and that Olympic Gold is our top priority,” Yadav declared. Along with the gold, the captain has his eyes set on an unprecedented third consecutive T20 World Cup title the same year.
