The Vagina Monologues is India’s longest-running show, having performed all over the country. Now, Picture Perfect Productions & Poor-Box Productions are launching the Gujarati translation of the original global phenomenon by V (formerly Eve Ensler) with a formidable star cast including Kruttika Desai, RJ Devaki, Swati Das, Girija Oak, and Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal. The show will premiere on the 8th of March, Women’s Day, followed by a show on the 9th of March at Tejpal Auditorium at 7:30 PM.
The team will also travel to Ahmedabad, Gujarat for an Invitee show on the 15th of March at the Natarani Amphitheatre. The world premiere shows (Gujarati version) in Mumbai and Ahmedabad are being presented in partnership with the US Consulate of Mumbai and the Rotary Club of Mumbai Nariman Point. Both outrageously hilarious and heartbreakingly dramatic, this theatrical smash-hit is based on the true stories of women from all over the world.
Co-producer, co-director and actor Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal shares, “When playwright V, formerly known as Eve Ensler, came into my life in 2000, it completely transformed me and my life. Her friendship and this play have been a gift. Through this journey, I have met some of the most wonderful women and men and have witnessed first-hand the massively transformative power of art.” She also shared the responsibility of translating the script to Gujarati alongside Chirantana Bhatt.
On adapting the play in Gujarati, co-producer and co-director Kaizaad Kotwal shares, “It is a privilege to be able to bring this play to India for the last 22 years and now doing it in Gujarati is very special. It is especially humbling to see the change that this play has managed to set into motion regarding issues of women’s empowerment and ending violence against women and girls.”
There are panel discussions scheduled to spread awareness as well. The first one will be held on 12th March at The Cathedral and John Connon School in partnership with the US Consulate Mumbai and UNICEF, Panelists include Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal, Kruttika Desai, Dr. Nayreen Daruwala etc in Mumbai.
The second one will be in Ahmedabad for which the details will be announced soon. “As part of the long-standing work around The Vagina Monologues to bring awareness to issues of women’s empowerment and gender-based violence. Both these panels will reach student audiences who are very important to the future of these issues which need urgent and massive attention.”, Kaizaad shared.
