The 1st Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD) launched in Package 2 which is awarded to Tata-Daewoo in JV.
OSD weighs 633.57MT in weight and is 69.778m long and 14.92m wide

The Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL) has been edging towards completing a milestone event with one of the most complex construction activity with the installation of the Orthotropic Steel Deck (OSD) in Package-2. On 20th December 2021 the feat began with the load out of a OSD of 69.777m long and 14.92m wide, weighing 633.57 MT. Tomorrow it completes the erection of the 1st OSD span on the sea link to be followed by 31 other spans.
The Package awarded to Tata-Daewoo JV involves construction of a 7.88kms long bridge across the Mumbai Bay including Shivaji Nagar Interchange at Navi Mumbai.
The Orthotropic Steel Deck is a highly reinforced (strengthened or stiffened) Steel Deck both transversely and longitudinally which will divide the vehicular load into three panes and improve the load-bearing capacity of the bridge. It is lighter and lesser self-weight than concrete or composite girders and a longer span of 180m can be designed using OSD. It is ideal looking at the MTHL site conditions (Navigational Channels, Discharge Channels) and longer Pier to Pier distances. It is cost-effective compared to the Cable Stay or Suspension bridges.
Aqua Float Barge 330 is being used for the transportation of this OSD. It is a flat top ballastable barge having weight of 2800 MT with 100.58 m in length and 36.57 m breadth. It can carry the weight of 15 T/m2. The OSD span will be towed to the Marine Pier – MP 181 to MP 182 where it will be installed between the two piers.

Of the total length of the MTHL bridge of 22km, the length of the OSD superstructure is around 69.778m The width of the steel superstructure is about 14.92m for each carriageway. The total steel quantity to be used for the OSD superstructure in the project will be about 85,000 tonnes.
The construction work of the entire MTHL has been divided into three packages, the milestone achieved at the package now paves the way for further 31 OSD spans to be installed in Package 2.
The steel spans are fabricated in fabrication workshops facilities located in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Myanmar, etc. The delivery has been done for the first Orthotropic Steel Decks (OSD) which will enable faster construction work and lessen deck-related on-site activities.
This is a very important stage and it accelerate the construction of MTHL that will connect South Mumbai to the Navi Mumbai in a mere 20 minutes as compared to the current travel time of 120 minutes.
“The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) has been identified as the important infrastructure to improve the connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and continue economic development in Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project cost is Rs. 17,187 crores and its 80% piers work is completed till now and the overall project is 65% completed. The project is expected to be completed in the year 2023″ said svr srinivas, Metropolitan Commissionier, MMRDA.
The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as the Sewri Nhava Sheva Harbour Link is a under-construction 21.80 km long, 6-lane bridge with 16.5km long over the sea and 5.5kms long viaduct on land on either side. The Link has interchanges at Sewri in Central Mumbai, Shivaji Nagar at Mumbai Bay and NH-4 B at Chirle, Navi Mumbai.
The MTHL will feature approach sections, interchanges, intelligence transport system (ITS) and the other amenities required for a sea bridge. The traffic conditions on the stretch will be monitored and managed from the traffic control centre with the help of CCTV cameras and related facilities installed on the stretch.
