India’s Maritime Future Takes Center Stage in Mumbai. The city of Mumbai witnessed a defining moment in India’s maritime journey as Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah inaugurated India Maritime Week 2025, a landmark event aimed at shaping India’s future as a global maritime power. The high-profile inauguration was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, and several dignitaries from India and abroad.
In a powerful address, Amit Shah declared that “this is India’s Maritime Moment”—one that transforms the Gateway of India into the Gateway of the World. He highlighted that due to the deep structural reforms led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India now stands as an emerging force on the global maritime map.
Transforming Vision into Reality: From ‘Sagar’ to ‘Mahasagar’
Shah reaffirmed that Prime Minister Modi’s maritime vision rests on three strong pillars — security, stability, and self-reliance.
Initiatives such as the Sagarmala Project, Blue Economy Framework, and Green Maritime Vision 2030 aim to position India among the top five nations in global shipbuilding by the year 2047.
Under this transformative approach, India has identified 839 maritime projects worth $70 billion, out of which 272 projects valued at $17 billion have already been completed. Projects like the $5 billion Great Nicobar Port, India’s largest dock at Cochin Shipyard, and the upcoming Maritime Heritage Complex in Gujarat signify India’s unwavering commitment to maritime modernization.
A Bridge Between the Indo-Pacific and the Global South
With a coastline stretching over 11,000 kilometers and a 23.7 lakh sq. km Exclusive Economic Zone, India’s maritime sector contributes significantly to national GDP and global trade. Amit Shah emphasized that India’s democratic stability, naval strength, and strategic location uniquely position it as a bridge between the Indo-Pacific and the Global South — promoting development, security, and environmental balance.
Over 100 countries, 350 speakers, 500 companies, and more than 1 lakh delegates are participating in India Maritime Week 2025 — making it the most prestigious maritime dialogue platform in the Indo-Pacific region. The summit is projected to generate investment opportunities exceeding ₹10 lakh crore, further boosting India’s role in the global maritime economy.
Building a Green and Inclusive Maritime Future
Emphasizing India’s responsibility toward climate-conscious development, Shah highlighted the nation’s focus on a Green Maritime Future — one that accelerates progress while preserving ecological harmony. He stated that India remains committed to supporting Small Island Nations and Global South countries, for whom the ocean is vital for both livelihood and survival.
“For these nations, climate change is an existential issue. India envisions a green, prosperous, and shared ocean that benefits all,” Shah remarked.
India Maritime Week 2025: A Defining Milestone
Over the past decade, Prime Minister Modi’s maritime policies have evolved into MAHASAGAR — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions — symbolizing India’s growing global influence. With increased investments, updated maritime laws, and a renewed focus on innovation and sustainability, India is steering toward its goal of becoming a maritime superpower by 2047.
As India Maritime Week 2025 unfolds in Mumbai, it reaffirms India’s resolve to shape the future of global trade, sustainable shipping, and ocean governance — not through competition, but through collaboration, innovation, and leadership.
