Film Review : “Laapataa Ladies ” Directed by Kiran Rao explores theme of Female  Bonding, Love, and Women Empowerment.

Director : Kiran Rao

Rating: ★★★★☆

Laapataa Ladies” is a refreshing addition to the bevvy of Hindi cinema, offering a delightful blend of comedy, drama and social commentary.

Set in the backdrop of rural India in 2001, “Laapataa Ladies” is directed by Kiran Rao. The film introduces us to the two brides – Jaya (Pratibha Ranta) and Phool (Nitanshi Goel) both with similar background yet different and how they take charge of the situation, winning hearts with their warmth and authencity. It follows their adventures as they evolve from gauche to confident ladies through sheer grit and determination of life’s challenges.

The film begins with a young couple, on their return journey to the boy’s village after completing all marriage rituals, the bride in her long Ghoonghat (veil) has her face hidden as per the traditional custom climbs into an overcrowded second-class railway compartment where they meet another couple who also returning back home. As night falls, tired and sleepy they doze off only to have the groom Deepak wake up with a jolt, realizes that he will miss his station if he doesn’t hurry and, in his haste, grabs the wrong bride’s hand as he jumps off the train. On reaching home, after the traditional welcome the bride is told to lift her Ghoonghat, is when everyone is shocked to notice that the bride has been switched. What ensues is chaos with the film following the adventure of the two brides, their resilience, showcasing female bonding, friendship and self-discovery.

Character Profile of Jaya. : Jaya’s appearance reflects her dynamic personality, she is vibrant and spirited from the moment we catch a glimpse of her on screen. Her greatest strength lies in her unwavering belief in herself and her ability to overcome adversity. A natural leader, she possess a sharp wit and a quick mind that allows her to navigate even the most difficult situations with grace and aplomb, her courage serves as an inspiration to all who encounter her, reminding them that true strength lies not in physical prowess, but in the courage to stand up for what is right and just.  Her character embarks on a journey of empowerment, leading the charge for gender equality and social justice in her community.

Meanwhile, Phool (Deepak’s lost wife), is a timid and introverted young woman who exudes innocence and vulnerability, having led a sheltered life stifled by societal norms and family obligations.  Phool’s evolution is catalyzed by a series of transformative experiences that challenge her perceptions and ignite her inner fire. Initially reluctant to step outside her comfort zone, she begins to shed the shackles of self-doubt and embrace her inherent strength. Encounters with inspiring mentors and supportive allies provide her with the courage towards self-discovery and personal growth, as she learns to trust in her abilities and embrace the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.

The lead male protagonist and husband ‘Deepak’ played by Sparsh Shrivastava is equally endearing. The lovelorn husband torn apart by his own fool hardiness, runs around to right his mistake, sadly, his visit to the local police station draws the attention of the Thanedar (Senior Police) Manohar (Ravi Kisan) who pursues the case for his vested interest of grabbing his hands on the missing girl and the gold she may have been wearing. This leads to putting the bride Jaya in deeper trouble, as she is vying to make use of this mix-up to run away to pursue her dream of a higher education in Organic Farming. As the story unfolds, we realize she was a reluctant bride, forced to marry over her choice of pursuing education to help regain the lost glory of her father and his farmland, which the family had lost to poor produces, over a period of time.

The screenplay and scenes are so beautifully written that each scene, Deepak’s reminiscing of the time spent with his new bride, the camaraderie between the Thanedar and his subordinate, Jaya’s encouraging words to the ladies of the household, the comedy of affairs, or a quick-witted retort are all set to add the feeling of feel good as the story unfolds, leaving a lasting impression on the minds of the audience.

The performances in “Laapataa Ladies” are stellar across the board, with each actor bringing depth and authenticity to their respective roles. The film is a testament to Kiran’s directorial prowess, with her meticulous attention to detail and masterful storytelling, she crafts a narrative that is both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant.

In conclusion, “Laapataa Ladies” is a compelling and timely exploration of a subject that remains as relevant today as ever. By shining a light on the evolution of women’s roles in society, Kiran invites audiences to reflect on the progress that has been made while acknowledging the work that still lies ahead.

The film will definitely benefit with the word-of-mouth publicity. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film is slated to release in theatres on March 1, 2024.
