Tesla has officially entered the Indian market, unveiling its highly anticipated electric SUV, the Model Y, alongside the launch of its first flagship Tesla Experience Centre at Maker Maxity Mall in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. This historic moment marks the beginning of a new chapter in India’s premium electric vehicle segment, blending global innovation with local anticipation.
The inauguration was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who welcomed Tesla’s debut and expressed confidence in the company’s future plans for India. He emphasized Tesla’s potential contributions to local manufacturing, EV innovation, and sustainability-focused research and development.
Mumbai Becomes Tesla’s Gateway to India
The Mumbai showroom is more than just a retail space. It serves as a full-fledged experience zone designed to introduce Indian customers to Tesla’s futuristic technology, minimalist aesthetics, and clean energy vision. Visitors to the BKC location can immerse themselves in the Tesla lifestyle, from viewing the sleek Model Y up close to engaging in real-time demonstrations of its cutting-edge features and digital interface.
The Model Y: Where Performance Meets Intelligent Design
Tesla’s Indian debut centers around the Model Y, a five-seater all-electric SUV that blends performance, range, and intelligent design. The rear-wheel drive (RWD) variant is priced at ₹60 lakh ( ₹59.89 lakh), while the long-range all-wheel drive version is offered at ₹68 lakh ( ₹67.89 lakh). Although the prices are significantly higher than Tesla’s offerings in the United States, China, or Europe, this is due to high import duties as the vehicles are currently being brought in as Completely Built Units (CBUs) from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory.
At first glance, it’s the sleek body lines and panoramic all-glass roof that grab attention. Step inside, and the minimalist yet tech-rich cabin comes alive with a 15.3-inch central touchscreen that controls virtually everything—from navigation to media, climate, and vehicle settings.
Driver and passenger comfort takes top priority. The power-adjustable front seats are both ventilated and heated, while the rear seats offer electric two-way foldability and heating, ensuring optimal comfort in every row. Rear passengers are treated to an 8-inch display, a 9-speaker surround sound system, ambient lighting, and Tesla’s signature air vents with electronic climate control—bringing a touch of luxury aviation into the SUV cabin.
Safety and convenience are also top-tier. The Model Y comes equipped with eight external cameras supporting Tesla’s renowned Autopilot system, enhancing driver assistance, lane-centering, adaptive cruise control, and potential Full Self-Driving capabilities in the future.
Not Just a Car, But a Connected Experience
The launch is being bolstered with a robust charging ecosystem, with four Supercharger stations being set up across BKC, Lower Parel, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. Each location will house 16 V3 Superchargers capable of delivering up to 250 kW—allowing a Model Y to gain over 270 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes. Tesla’s real-time charger availability and route navigation through its proprietary app will make planning long drives as seamless as ordering a cab.
An Expanding Footprint for an Expanding India
Mumbai may be Tesla’s first stop, but it’s far from the last. A second showroom is slated to open in New Delhi by the end of this month, followed by service and retail expansions in Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad. With operational offices already functioning in Bengaluru and Pune, Tesla’s commitment to building a full-fledged India operation is evident.
India’s EV Era Finds Its Spark
The Indian automotive market has long awaited this moment—and Tesla’s entry comes not just as a symbol of luxury, but as a catalyst for change. With urban Indians growing increasingly eco-conscious and tech-savvy, the Model Y doesn’t just promise a new drive—it promises a new lifestyle.
Tesla’s arrival in India comes at a time when the country is accelerating its shift toward electric mobility. The presence of a Tesla Experience Centre in BKC is a powerful symbol of this transition, offering a blend of aspiration, awareness, and accessibility. Whether you’re looking to schedule a test drive, explore Tesla’s software features, or simply witness the future of automotive technology firsthand, the new showroom is now the epicenter of India’s EV movement.
