Indian Boxers Spark Glory at World Boxing Championships 2025 with Nupur Sheoran’s Medal

Indian boxing celebrated a historic moment as Nupur Sheoran assured the country of its first medal at the World Boxing Championships 2025 in Liverpool. Competing in the women’s +80 kg category, Sheoran defeated Uzbekistan’s Oltinoy Sotimboeva 4–1 in a gritty quarterfinal bout, guaranteeing at least a bronze medal for India.

The 26-year-old, who carries forward the rich legacy of her grandfather, heavyweight boxing legend Hawa Singh, showed remarkable composure despite a contest marked by frequent clinches and penalties. Her win signals India’s growing presence on the world stage in the heavier weight divisions, an area traditionally dominated by European and Central Asian fighters.

Adding to India’s medal tally, Jaismine Lamboria stormed into the semifinals of the 57 kg category, while Pooja Rani (80 kg) and Minakshi Hooda (48 kg, non-Olympic category) also advanced to the last four, assuring further podium finishes. The performances underline India’s depth and rising power across multiple divisions.

However, the championships also brought heartbreak as two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen bowed out after a 0–5 defeat to Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu in the 52 kg quarterfinals. Despite her early exit, Zareen’s consistency in recent years remains an inspiration for young boxers.

With Sheoran leading the charge, India’s strong showing at Liverpool reflects a blend of new stars and established fighters determined to make their mark on global boxing. The semifinal bouts promise more history in the making as the tricolour continues to shine brightly inside the ring.
